BWAHA. I'm dying over here with that conversation. "Tissues are on aisle 24." I've never cried in the grocery store, but I've certainly LMFAO'd. In the card section.
So great to celebrate with OLD parents. My dad lived until 97, my mom is 91. Now, to answer your question:
HELL YES I've cried in public! Until I was 33 I wasn't a cryer. At 33 I quit drinking, and one result was that my emotions thawed and I was ALWAYS crying, like water out of a fountain and I couldn't do anything about it. It was strangely liberating. I cried walking to work, I cried at work, I cried in the car, I cried at every movie, at the sweet cat rubbing up against my leg. Once I started crying I stopped having panic / anxiety attacks! The crying wasn't just sadness, it was simply emotion, processing, a psyche changing... maybe?
Then, six years later, heart break--I cried in the grocery store when I bought the skinny quart of milk, after the joy of buying a proper sized milk for me and the b.f. That, also, was liberating. Like letting the body do what it had to do--like sweat!
Thank you so much for sharing this personal experience. 🥰🙏 I heard that scientists discovered toxins in our tears. I can believe this. It makes sense given your story and I’ve had a different sort of experience after “detoxing.”
I just found you on @sarahfay Friday thread. This is funny and poignant. It resonates with me. I lost my Mom several years ago at 93. I felt so fortunate to have had her for so long. Thank you for sharing this.
While sitting in the waiting room of the orthodontist while my younger daughter was getting her braces adjusted, my older daughter sent me pictures of her in the wedding dress she had chosen. I’ve never been so proud to cry in the company of soccer moms in my life.
So beautiful Carissa. You are so lucky to have a dad that has all his faculties and can still remember things. That is definitely worth crying about--anywhere, anytime. What a gift. I wish him a very happy 90th birthday. And what a heartfelt tribute of the absolute best kind--funny and warm-hearted at the same time. You are so good at this. I love the clerk: "tissues are on aisle 24." Perfect. xo
Airplane movie reviews would be fab regular feature on your stack. Which airline offers the best selection, wifi, who is sitting next to you and what are they watching...? Hehe.
Such an amazing moment and yay dancing!!! Hoping you all had the best time.
The last time I cried in public was in the ER when I broke my face for 3rd time. It just seemed like too many times for the same thing to keep happening??? And then when I got served by my landlords... I cried like a speechless Meg Ryan... Like if Meg Ryan were a Mime? 😂

Me too! I love humorous cards!
You put his picture on the cake? How grand! Does your Dad look a bit like Milton Berle?
Happy Belated! And a sneaky way to get your kids to come - smart girl!
Boyhood pic on cake!
Doesn’t look like Milton Berle. Haha.
❤️

Thanks for your piece, and the question!
Thank you for this.

Your parents— what a blessing. 🙏

Thank you for subscribing and commenting. It’s a true blessing to have an elderly parent who is “with it.” It seems unusual these days. 😞
What a blessing to have your dad in your life! I hope had had the opportunity to read this and know that he is so loved!
I rewrote my How to Measure A Dad essay and read it as a toast to him. He thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Even cried a little. Very undad.

Love. This. Anyone notice?
Yes! A couple of mom’s looked uncomfortable so I showed them the phone. They cried with me.
That’s awesome!! 🥰❤️🙏

Thx so much. Hope the end gave you a giggle. :)
Loved this

“Are you crying? There’s no crying at birthdays!” (With apologies to “A League of Their Own.”)
So glad you know that movie. It’s a classic. Thx for reading and commenting!
I know it’s not manly or macho, but every finish line I cross, brings tears to my eyes. I guess that is public. 💪😄
It takes courage for a man to cry. Courage for a woman too. My dad used to run marathons. What a feat! And feet-- they must hurt afterwards.
There is no crying in Baseball, but definitely as a runner.
I was hoping someone would quote Tom Hanks. Hehe.
Awww, loved this and aren't you fortunate! I'm getting ready to go to my aunt's 95th birthday party and I could so relate.
Happy Birthday, auntie! 95! Dang.
We should be so lucky, right?!?
I can sometimes be seen bawling my eyes out at 35,000 ft, but no one ever takes any notice:

Has anyone else experienced the Mile-Cry Club?
Crying at 35,000 feet. Hehe.

Not sob exactly but cry yes. I'm well known for it!
🥰
Tears of joy are a different thing altogether
Weddings too.
I love that you were sobbing while getting your Dad a card. His 90th deserves tears and trumpets and a ton of love and he got all that!
Thx, Donna. ❤️

The hospital is a cry free judgement zone😂
Oh, thank you for the amnesty! 😂
Definitely sob worthy, my friend. Mercury was beyond retrograde. Meg Marceau?
hahaha!
