Hilarious *and* educational. I may not have the perfect pillow yet, but this one is in the running for "perfect post"! It arrived just before my bedtime and it made me so happy and relaxed, I had a great sleep.

I'm a bit pillow picky. I have one pillow for my head that is a cube, allegedly good for side sleepers. But it's not quite high enough for me to use all night without clogging up my sinuses, so I have to have a second, very thin pillow on top. Too thick and my neck is at a bad angle, too thin and it's problem one again.

Then there's my small leg pillow for between my knees. Absolutely essential and I do take it traveling. And I have a preferred pillow to cuddle with because it prevents my nose from breathing on the rest of my body.

And really I feel like I should get some new ones, even though I wash them and what not but like...how do I get new ones that are perfect again? I don't even know exactly what I'm looking for.

Look at some comments. People posting their fav pillows and where to buy!

I've never seen a cube. Hmmm.

I have the same issue with too high, too low. Too high-- neck problems; too low, reflux.

Knee pillow I don't understand. When you want to change positions it's annoying, right?

The Pillow Corner in a hotel in Japan was the best pillow experience ever! A Choose Your Own Pillow adventure! (I've messaged you photos!)

Definitely a pillow person. Hard to understand why others would not bother. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Not spending the right effort for superb mattress, flipping it regularly, great sheets for the right season and seasonal blankets and GREAT pillows seems a bad move.

Expand full comment

Spot on, Mark. And yes, 1/3 of life in bed is crazy when you think about it.

I wrote a post about it LONG AGO. There is evidence, when we sleep, our brain goes through a cleanup cycle that extends the useful life of our brains. It is probably why, it is likely, there is no such thing as catching up on sleep. BTW we make sure to replace our pillows on a pretty steady schedule :) We saw a live comedian once (local) observational humor. He said something akin to "the parts of our body we do not cover up likely get dirtier out in the world than most other parts :) Your head probably gets filthy. That means your pillow does also :)

So funny! I love the made up dialogue between Rich and I! Haha. Yes, every night for 25 years, he'd climb into bed, punch his pillow and say, "is this my pillow?" implying that I had stolen his pillow and was not using it. I like the mushy ones too, but not too mushy. I know when visiting you, I DON'T need to bring my pillow!

Haha. I scope the good pillow in a hotel room and take it.

Absolutely a pillow fan. I just recently found my ideal pillow at a Walmart in Texas. It’s heavenly. Nobody else likes it the way I do. That means I won’t have to share. 😁

Perfect! Congrats! 🙏🏼🥰

Never was pillow picky until I found Casper pillows. Now everywhere I go, I compare and am sadly disappointed. Casper the Friendly Ghost Pillow for the win!

Oooo. Will have to look it up.

Memory foam all the way. Otherwise, it had better not be too fat of a pillow or I'd rather use nothing. Those giant overstuffed hotel pillows can take a hike. I've used a folded towel instead so I wouldn't wake up totally ruined with over-bent neck syndrome.

I tried memory foam for a while. It ended up being too hard. I’ve got arthritis and DDD in my neck. Towels seem to be the consensus amongst guys here. 😀

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who can't find the perfect pillow. They all make my ears hurt halfway through the night - and my ears don't even stick out that much!

Same! That’s why I like the mushy ones!

Having been a travel writer who got to sleep in some pretty posh places, I've found many versions of pillow heaven over the years. And surprisingly, Hilton has amazing pillows. I've never found quite the same in a store. But I have a pair now that I love a LOT.

Expand full comment

Hilton probably sells them. Most hotels sell their mattresses and pillows. I haven’t explored that route but know people who have.

Expand full comment

They probably do. I was just never in a position to want to carry pillows in my travels lol. I used to work for Hilton so I've had the pleasure of testing out many Hilton pillows in Louisiana, Toronto, Vancouver, Jamaica, etc. I miss my Hilton employee status...the discounts were insane.

Expand full comment

Oh dang! I’ve heard you can get amazing discounts when you work for a hotel.

Expand full comment

Yup. Most of the HIltons I stayed at were $350+ per night and my rate was between $35 - $45. It was stupid cheap. I worked as a part-time bartender for years just for the travel discounts.

I have a friend who did that in Boston at the Weston! She bartended for the cheap rates. 😃

LOL I think moonlighting for a hotel brand is one of the best life/travel hacks that exists 😁

I remembered the type of pillow! It was a buckwheat pillow. And now you've got me on a mission to find a new one. lol.

Yay! Let me know when you find it. I saw many buckwheat on Amazon.

I am picky and my husband is not. I ordered a pillow and found it perfect so I ordered another one as backup. The second pillow, from the same company, ordered a week after the first, was NOT the same pillow! It ended up on my husband’s side of the bed. On my last cruise, the cabin steward spent three days trying to fashion a pillow I could sleep on. He was a real gem. My daughter and her husband take their pillows any time they sleep away from home. I don’t know how people sleep on just any pillow, but it would certainly make travel easier.

Expand full comment

I hear you. I love that the cruise steward tried to be helpful. He or she must have been young and eager. (For a tip?) 😉

And the second pillow wasn’t the same! Ugh.

I’m with Lindsey’s description, and as I think back on three weeks of travel I just completed, I can remember where the pillows were good and where they sucked. At home I have a decent pillow … but I know there’s better out there and I’m still looking.

3 weeks? Someplace fun?

You’re still on the hunt. I’m getting recommends in the comments. I may have to compile a list for all interested.

I can sleep anywhere, on any pillow - Mr. Smith has got it right though, a friendly dog can be a great sleep aid! My hubby can't sleep with pillows, he needs a specially folded towel.

Your son is a cutie! And a smart cookie, too! Has he invented the snack pillow yet?

Any pillow!? That’s tremendous. A folded towel?! You two are easy guests.

Steefel man pushes our pooch towards me. He doesn’t like the “heating blanket” on him.

Dylan earned the nickname Snack Daddy when he was growing up.

But HE has to fold the towel himself. If I'm the one who makes the bed, he'll shake put my apparent monstrosity and redo it. 🤣

Steefel Man is very lucky he's not a Steefel Woman, or he'd get the joy of turning into a walking, talking heating blanket...

"Snack Daddy." That's a good one. It will have to come out of retirement if he ever becomes an actual daddy. 😊
