Wow, now I’m listening to the whole song in my head. I always hated it as a kid, so of course it’s trapped up there? It’s on repeat now, especially the clouds in her coffee.
I prefer my coffee cloudless most of the time, but every once in a while I add a little cumulus or nimbostratus.
I’ll be on the lookout for a curdled cream-cloud now. Thanks!
Time to go listen to some other music and drive that song back into the depths where it belongs. If I get desperate I’ll find some Achy Breaky Song and put it to bed.
That was fun! And your husband still has it. I grew up on the soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar and still know the lyrics to every tune, but I couldn’t do nearly that well. Carly Simon? Nah, don’t care. But I listen to music constantly.
Really enjoyed the song commentary. I occasionally pick apart the lyrics of songs like this, I remember when I told a couple of my foster kids Rihanna's "lightning strikes every time you move" sounded painful.
I wrote an essay which is coming out in an anthologynext year. It's called 'Otherhood, which is about people who aren't mothers, or aren't within the conventional definition of mothers, including those who chose to be childfree, those who didn't get to choose or lost children or are stepmothers etc.
It's important to protect confidentiality, so I mostly can't write about it, but the essay was mostly about the attitudes people around me had to me fostering.
Good post. I've always liked the lyrics (and "mystery") of this song. In reply, 1. P.O.: Every commercial jingle MMD: almost anything McCartney; 2. Even though I play and sing (less so these days), I've never been a "listener"...except when I could blast it on my 50 acres, but now I've discovered Apple Music and abandoned SiriusXM (no need since no longer x-state commuting) so I'm building my list; 3. Carly---yes and forever but not the first choice when I dial in; 4) salad is my first choice for dinner...no big meals within four or so hours before bedtime for this pilgrim; 5) uhhhhh.... P.S. I don't think I've ever made a cappuccino or latte without thinking "clouds in my coffee!"
Fabulous post! It is a banal song and thanks for pointing out just how much! In answer to your questions:
1. HATE Kate Bush singing anything.
2. Love listening to music of the ages - but currently into easy listening jazz.
3. Husband and self were mild Carly Simon fans - more the era than her specifically.
4. Often.
5. Hubby still has it nearly 48 years of marriage later - love him, makes me laugh, connects to my soul and makes me feel safe. Can't do better than that.
Great answers. I remember Kate Bush. Haha. Jazz is always great. Hubby and I caught a jazz band while we were in Florence. It was outdoors, overlooking the city, a perfect breeze and a delightful band.
Let the River Run by Carly Simon always lifts me--especially when sung by a full choir. I can't think of any song that riles me... https://youtu.be/gp5JCrSXkJY brings out the fighter in me b/c of Crip Camp. I miss big salads for dinner--somehow throwing them in the Vitamix feels wrong. Maybe in a few weeks? Hubby has the PIPES!
When my stomach acts up I make a green protein shake. Coconut milk, avocado, carrot, celery, protein greens, cucumber and protein powder. It’s delish. 🙏 I also add flax powder, coconut water and Aloe juice.
I always imagined that dreams as clouds in the coffee was a metaphor for a dream fading. The milk looks like a swirling cloud when it’s first poured, but then it dissipates, blends into its surroundings.
This was fun Carissa as it seemed a new direction for you. I read into it you are not a fan of Carly Simon. Ready for correction and will check in tomorrow. Your questions:
(1) I love music and have a diverse collection lots of genres. I turn off the ones before they get my goat. Lots of songs, too many to list are ones to love!!! (2) A day does not go by where I don't listen to music. (3) Yes -- thought some of her 80s/90s stuff were great remakes of the standards (4) Yes -- always a great last meal of the day!!! (5) Yes
Awesome, Mark. Thx for reading as I know you’re vacationing.
Simon had some catchy tunes but once my mom put into my head that Simon must have had connections and that’s how she made it, that’s all I could think about. Hehe.
I never liked this song either so I appreciate your comments about it!! I think I'm like you with songs, I like them but I don't get INTO them the way my husband does. Well done Jeffery, your not-for-public-consumption rendition of Gethsemane is amazing!!
Great stuff. Re: "Your hat strategically dipped below one eye". Back in the 70s, with a Panama hat or similar worn at a slight angle looked mega cool. Even now. I have a pic of my cousin taken circa 1976, he's a few years older than me, wearing his hat just like that, wearing a suit that looks like he just stepped out of a Carnaby Street boutique, and he looks like cool personified. I almost fell for him myself. As for 'gavotte', I read a great short story called Performance, and one of the lines is: "He didn't walk into a room, he entered it", because everything he did or said was a performance. If Carly had that sort of thing in mind, gavotting is perfect.
Too many favorite songs to choose. The only songs that used to piss me off were ones played way too often on the radio. Since I rarely listen to a radio station anymore, I don't get irritated because I'm choosing to listen over and over again, ha! I don't use spotify, but I'd like to begin to. I currently used Apple. Thanks for the fun! 💜

Haha. Thx for reading and commenting. Hope you replaced the song in your head. 🙏
Thanks! I never knew the lyric was "gavotte"
I always thought ti was "go by" with a bizarre pronunciation
My wife has always despised Warren Beatty.
I like this song, but my favorite of hers is "That's the Way I Always Heard iI Should Be"
And yes, your husband has it!
Thx! Only 1 reader here knew what Gavotte was.
The column title is spot-on! And, I agree with you, “clouds in my coffee” is an extremely confusing lyric.
Right? Hehe.
That was fun! And your husband still has it. I grew up on the soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar and still know the lyrics to every tune, but I couldn’t do nearly that well. Carly Simon? Nah, don’t care. But I listen to music constantly.
Ahh! So glad you know the musical. Not many do. One has to be a serious Broadway buff to know J.Christ Superstar.
Thanks for the shout-out. And yes, as you'll see on my first musical post this week, I do have (one and only one) Carly song. #JamesBondthemesong
Ah, James Bond, yes. She did "The Spy Who Loved Me." There's a great documentary about the Bond songs. @sassylittlesubstack has probably seen it.
Seen it. LOL
Really enjoyed the song commentary. I occasionally pick apart the lyrics of songs like this, I remember when I told a couple of my foster kids Rihanna's "lightning strikes every time you move" sounded painful.
Haha. Yes.
Ever write about your experience with foster kids?

This looks wonderful. Congrats on being a contributor. Well done. Looking forward to reading it. 🙏❤️

Love your answers. It’s sad that most people still know the Oscar Meyer song from the 70s. I do.
No big meals for me too. Can’t eat after 6:30, 7 the latest.

I figured this as well but thought I’d try to look at it comically. It’s quite poetic as written. 🙏🙏❤️
1. Santa Baby always pisses me off. Anything by Dire Straits makes my day.
2. We have a silent house , but I enjoy listening to loud, obnoxious old school rock in the car. Bet you didn't have me pegged as a head banger. 🤯
3. I never really cared about Ms. Simon one way or the other - I didn't turn her off if she came on the radio, but I never bought any of her records.
4. I like salad WITH dinner, but I don't think my brain would feel like I've had dinner if it was only a salad - even a big one. 😂
5. Oh yeah. Almost 44 years together, but he's still got it. 😘
Love your answers. Dire Straits! Haha. Do you want your MTV? That’s the way to do it. Hehe.
Love old school rock. 70s? 60s?
44 years! Congrats!
That ain't work'n.... 😂 I like 70's stuff, pretty much. I do miss my MTV, but "Sultans of Swing" is my favorite.
Thank you, but it's easy - I picked a keeper. 😊

I need the name of said cousin? That description of him is too perfect? I’ll make one up. Miles Sanborn. Ian Rockford.
LOL. Definitely a Miles Sanborn :-)

Get Happy— that one played over and over. I was Getting Annoyed.
Answers:
1. Nena's '99 Red Balloons' REALLY pisses me off... beyond belief.
2. I have one spotify playlist, which I constantly update.
3. Yes.
4. No.
5. Very much so.
99 Red Balloons WAS very irritating, I agree!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
