1) If you had the funds, would you clone your pet? If so, why?
No. Never. Because, like you said, SHELTERS! Seriously, though. We all know what happens when you clone living things. They make movies about this, people! When you play God it always. Goes. Wrong. Side note: this sounds like it would make an interesting book idea, so, much obliged for the name drop. Which I googled as well, btw. Interesting note: they only list the team members' first names. No last names. SUS! Blake No Last Name, President "has had a successful 25 year career in the animal genetics business". Only 25 years? And none of that so-called "career" is listed in your bio, Blake. SUS! And he only has an MBA. Yawners. No PhD? Uh, VERY SUS! I feel that when you're dealing with essentially bringing a lifeform back to life, I'd expect Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking-level type of experience, y'know?
2) Tell me your three favorite things about your fur baby. If you don’t have one, a human will do.
I used to have a fur baby and the three things I lurved about her was 1) how she greeted us like a dog whenever we got home. So happy to see us, she'd greet us with a meow, like she was saying Hi. I really lurved when we came back from vacays (we would have a friend or family member check in on her) and she'd greet us with a string of meows; which probably meant she was cussing us out for leaving her. 2) the way she'd use us as a bed. Mr. Ex would keep our home so called (all year round) that I practically lived in a blue fuzzy robe. Whenever I would lay in bed to read, she would hop in my lap and snuggle in. If he was wearing a sweatshirt, she'd climb on him and hunker under his chin. I also thought it was hilarious when she'd roll around in Mr. Ex's dirty underwear. Not sure what that was all about but it was like catnip for her, and 3) Cat conversations. I've had cats previously, but none were as talkative as Sweetpea. We'd go back and forth for a good 5 minutes. It's times like that that I wish I was Dr. Doolittle. Or Tarzan. Or a shifter. Just someone who had an affinity with animals and could understand them.
Another side note: Robert Redford was a hawty back in the day!
She was! I left her with Mr. Ex when we divorced in 2019 and when he moved away, I'd heard that he'd left her with a co-worker. And that she passed away sometime in June 2019. Sadly. I knew something was up with her, though, she just kept getting skinnier and skinnier. 😿
Wow, I thought I'd heard everything, but apparently not. I had no idea people did that or that it was even possible. I agree that it would be much better to adopts dogs from the shelter, and perhaps donate some of that clone money to those very shelters.
Did Pet Cemetery teach us nothing? And in Multiplicity -- didn't each clone get dumber?
I absolutley LOVE my dog Moosh. It borders on unhealthy... He's evil cuteness personified. In a world of good boys, he's the BEST boy. I would literally starve to make sure he ate, but I would not clone him --
Aside from that, it is his personality, intelligence and temperament that makes him so amazing --which added to his adorable face makes him irresistible. My boy is 10 now and he's big for a Pomeranian. He has a bad disc that makes him walk sideways and still he wants to play all the time. I know I only have a few good years left with Moosh, I am preparing myself, but you will all hear me wail when he leaves me. But, still, I could not clone him.
Moosh sounds amazing. What a sweetie. And big for his breed. I love that he ignores his disc issue. Apollo has a bad shoulder and runs sideways and will still chase the ball. I need to learn from our dogs. I get cranky if I get a mosquito bite.
Having recently lost our beloved cat I can see the appeal of cloning her, however it IS about personality and soul, and it IS about all those lovely animals waiting for adoption in shelters so, no. If I had the money I would embrace your idea of supporting a shelter and adopting a pet. You make so many good points here CK, like four identical dogs with no alpha...how is that a good idea? Kudos to Jeffrey for his volunteer work❤️, an angel on earth.
Apollo is so sweet. I still can't comprehend how fabulous Robert Redford's hair is??? Freddie must be incredible. I could never clone even though I miss our Lab Sleeper so much. There are just too many dogs needing rescue. In SF, there's a great group https://muttville.org/ and I always thought if I adopted another pooch--it would be a senior rescue from there.
Yow. The lengths humans go to avoid the inevitable. There was a doc years ago called Furever, but was about people getting their pets taxidermied. I thought that was bizarre but this takes it to another level, defying death itself!
Apollo has the most delightfully expressive face. He also wears props well!
No pets here at the moment, much to the irritation of my sons. I wouldn't clone anyone or anything. I'm too delighted with their uniqueness and irritated by their annoyances to multiply it! I did love the line about the lipstick, though! 💄
As tempting as it sounds—I love my dog with everything I have—I couldn’t do it. Especially since, as you pointed out, there are so many dogs that need a home. Years ago, I adopted a Springer who also had Springer rage. It was heartbreaking. There’s a George Carlin quote that your essay reminded me of: Every dog is a tragedy waiting to happen. Sad but true.
We loved our little Pippin, and were devastated when he died, but we would not have had him cloned. In my mind there could only be one Pippin.
He was faithful and super protective - he weighed all of ten pounds, but once went after a pitbull to protect his mama. He was cuddly and would sleep on the bed with us every night. When he became too weak to jump up on the bed towards the end of his life, we dragged the mattress onto the floor. He loved to eat EVERYTHING. He was the sweetest, smartest, lovingest dog I'd ever met. He was supposed to be my dog, but he chose my hubby... which was okay with me.
I think cloned pets are a bad idea. If the original had some issue that led to their demise, cloning it could only lead to yet another heartache. And without having shared all the experiences of the original, a clone could not possibly be the same creature. As far as the soul issue goes, I think each clone gets it's very own.... I've exhausted my rant, time for a nap. 😉
He’s amazing. Let’s them “play” with him, “snuggle” him and curl up and sleep on him. He’s the best family dog. But I can see in his eyes when he looks at me…like, really?! When do they go home? 😂

Sweetpea sounds adorbs. Love the name too.
Blake? No last name? Yikes. Sounds fishy.
xoxo

Springers! We had a field springer (the kind the Bushes had). They are a "merry breed".
Indeed. Love our Springers.
"Instead of paying 50k to clone your dog, how about donating 50k to your local animal shelter and adopting? Just sayin’."
Ya think? 💚
Never.
Our little boy has been a unique and irreplaceable friend. He takes his place at the head of our canine hall of fame. He is owed that unique status.
The terrier! 🥰🙏 There’s only one.

Crazy, right?
Love “clone money.” If only we could clone money. Heheh.
Did Pet Cemetery teach us nothing? And in Multiplicity -- didn't each clone get dumber?

Thx, Donna. I agree. Our pets have souls. The day after Simon died I felt his soul run along side me showing me he was ok. I knew it was him.
That is wonderful💕
Exactly. Adopt then give a hefty donation to the shelters that so desperatley need it.
Cheers to the no-kill shelters. 🥰🙏
Nope. No cloning. Just get another dog - if you must. Or a cat. And don't clone that either.
🙏🙏

Muttville looks amazing. Yes to a senior rescue. 🥰
Omg it’s Pet Cemetery! Ahhhhhhhh!!! I might have been tempted to clone my first dog. I was a bit obsessed with her.
🥰🙏
So fascinating! And Apollo is adorable
Thx, little Miss Moofin. 🤣🥰
Yow. The lengths humans go to avoid the inevitable. There was a doc years ago called Furever, but was about people getting their pets taxidermied. I thought that was bizarre but this takes it to another level, defying death itself!
I guess cloning is the new age taxidermy.
😂

Thank you. Apollo does have an expressive face. It’s his big spirit.
I’m with your sons.

Great quote. I miss GC.
You had a lemon Springer too? I’ve never met another who experienced this.
Yes. It was terrible.

Pippin sounds truly special.
Great point about the clone having the same health issues.
Enjoy the nap. 🤣
No. Although we had a cat once who was the bomb. If I could guarantee personality and I was rich, and bored, I would muse about that one.
My current fur baby is Ryder my big Bernese mountain dog. Can’t imagine the last three years without him. We are empty nesters and he’s my baby.
He gets very put out when the grandsons visit and my attention is taken with very loud, very rambunctious little boys!
Ryder sounds like a sweetie.
Is he good with the grandsons? Like a big brother?
He’s amazing. Let’s them “play” with him, “snuggle” him and curl up and sleep on him. He’s the best family dog. But I can see in his eyes when he looks at me…like, really?! When do they go home? 😂
