I enjoy horror movies but they typically do not scare me. I think they're just fun. And it's not for thrills. I won't get on any carnival rides. I will mention a few that did scare me, though. There's a movie called the The Woman in Black from 1989 and it's not that scary overall but there is one scene in it and damn. You'll know it when you see it. I also thought Lake Mungo was one of the creepiest films ever. It's in a mockumentary style which I don't like, but the camera effects are insane and truly creepy as hell. I also think the first Paranormal Activity movie is super creepy and not even when you're watching it but later on when you find yourself alone. It's like the demon comes to get you then. Great post.
I like reading horror more than I like watching it, but I still watch a lot of horror movies. I do not like ones with torture or violence towards women, but I do thoroughly enjoy campy horror and over the top gore so I’m full of contradictions. 😁
I was paralyzed with fear for many nights after reading “Michelle Remembers” (set in my city!!), and have seen eyes in our apartment after reading a scaryStephen King, and to this day, keep my neck covered in case of vampires. 💕
I spend at least half of scary movies with my hands plastered over my eyes, asking whomever's watching alongside to tell me if it's over yet. Long periods of suspense followed by a jump scare just about gives me a heart attack!
I'm too sensitive to energy to watch scary movies these days. Used to love them, but the world itself has become such a scary movie, that I prefer movies that are inspiring, uplifting and leave me feeling good.
Awesome post! I don’t seek out scary movies save for one fabulous subgenre - the scary fish movie! 🦈 I’m utterly, utterly obsessed with them, and have been for decades. I love the good ones but the ridiculous ones are also incredibly entertaining!
Last week was amazing because I went to the theatre to watch Ian Shaw’s (Robert ‘Quint’ Shaw’s son) play ‘The Shark is Broken’, which is about the fractious and hilarious relationships between the three leading actors during the long breaks in filming ‘Jaws’ in which the prosthetic sharks were being repaired. Shaw plays Shaw in the play, and is absolutely brilliant.
It's been in the West End, and lately has been on tour at theatres around the UK. It was on Broadway in summer 2023. Here's the blurb about it - https://thesharkisbroken.com
And Ian Shaw is more Quint than the movie's Quint (his dad), seriously. Awesome, awesome work. The play isn't only hilarious but also deeply moving - oh gosh, it was wonderful. xxx
I don’t like scary rides. Scary movies that are about something that can really happen, such as Cujo, Breakdown and Joyride and many others I’m sure are very frightening to me. You can’t watch scary movies more than once because the suspense is gone.
I feel like every scary thing I've ever watched has become a part of my paranoid imagination forever. So, I steer clear. However, I do love the really old Universal monster movies. I love the costumes and the sets design.
I read The Shining while on book tour, staying in hotels by myself for two weeks. Bad decision. I was too scared to sleep, to go to the bathroom, to wander the halls. Halfway through I switched to something lighthearted and not scary at all.
I love everything scary and weird. Stephen King and Dean Koonz are my favorite writers. I want to feel terrified when I read it. I can't tell you why I enjoy it.
Gghhaaaagh... my parents completely traumatized me with Jaws! What were they thinking??? We were living right on Bodega Bay at the time--already the location of Hitchcock's The Birds and where they have LOADS OF SHARKS--and I could not go near the beach for at least a month or a hundred. But like others here... a few years later, I was sneaking Stephen King's home in my Tiger Beats. These days, I favor psychological horror or classic suspense; I love Otto Preminger's "Laura", Hitchcock's "Rear Window" or Eggers's "The Witch", but I've already lived through enough outlandish gore in real life to dispense with it in my movie life--if that makes sense? In terms of crazy thrills, I traveled 10k miles to go on a date with someone I hadn't seen in 30 years. Def. scary--but then wildly annoying when all his ex-wives showed up. 😂
I'm boring. I don't like to be scared on purpose. I think the worst scare in memory was when I opened the barn door to see a skunk standing two feet away from me... scared me more than my rollover accident! I was stupid, I screamed, but luckily the skunk was stupid too and just ran away.
My older sister took me to see jaws when I was 4. I was too obsessed with an aqua man doll that I thought was superman to pay much attention. Now as an adult, my favorite scary movie is Ghost.

Thx, Parker. Yes! Camera work and sound effects can be scarier than the visual.
You think James Cameron made "Alien"? Shame on you.
I stand corrected. I need to change to Ridley.
1. I still struggle to make it through The Wizard of Oz.
2. Try crossing a street filled with motorcycles in Vietnam. That's scary!
1. I do wonder if that movie might have scared little kids back in the day. Lions, Tigers, Bears and flying monkeys. Oh my.
2. No cross walks in Vietnam?
1. It scar(r)ed me!
2. They're more aspirational than mandatory.

Haha. I do that if there’s blood in a comedy. Sounds like we’re sistahs in horror avoidance.
I'm too sensitive to energy to watch scary movies these days. Used to love them, but the world itself has become such a scary movie, that I prefer movies that are inspiring, uplifting and leave me feeling good.
Agree. I can’t even watch the news anymore.

OMG. That sounds hilarious. Is it on the West End? Fringe? It should be a movie.

Great point. Once is plenty.

Yes! Same! I will remember every details.
Nope, not a fan.
😊👏👏👏
The older I get, the less scared I am of scary movies. I haven't been terrified by a movie in years.
That’s fab! 👏👏👏

It’s amazing where the mind goes. Peter Pan was onto something.

And you can sleep at night? That’s amazing! Psychologists should study you.
🤣🤣🤣

I thought I replied but it’s not there. Love that you hid scary books.
Rear Window was brilliant! And terrifying.
How was the date?

That would make me jump too. The outdoors at night can be spooky even if it’s a raccoon.
Um... well, ah, I hate to admit this, but this was in broad daylight! I'm such a wuss! 🤣
Haha. Hubby once opened a barn door only to be met by a wasp nest on the door. He could have won an Olympic sprint.
Mother Nature has the power to turn any of us into wusses. 🤣

4! Yikes. Did you have nightmares?
Ghost was an interesting genre. More thriller. Loved Ghost.
