Sheila --

You were a GREAT guest here. Thoroughly enjoyed how you easily transitioned between questions and wrote vivid and entertaining answers. Especially loved you story about NOLA and that heat and humidity. Having some experience working in Louisiana at times, one has to be committed to a relationship that includes that climate. A fun story you might enjoy. I came to know a couple that lived a few years in Louisiana as transplants and it came time to get their house painted. They were not seasoned Bayou folk so they had it done in the summertime. They eventually had us roaring as they explained that their house got painted and about three weeks later, the paint was still tacky. Steamy.

Great interview as always, CK! I just wanted to mention how important Weird Al and Dr. Demento were to me growing up. And my dad introduced me to classic comedy too: Sid Caesar, the Marx Brothers, etc. Still love them all. There’s a great documentary called “Caesar’s Writers” that’s worth watching if you can find it.

I want to see this documentary!

Sheila, you would love Chris’ stack. A fellow humorist.

I admire you funny as F women!! I'm pretty sure I can do sarcastic, just not sure about funny sarcastic. It's funny for me, but perhaps no one else...which means entirely not funny! Which, now that I think about it, probably just makes it sarcastic mean.🤦🏼‍♀️

Sheila's humor is 100% my vibe! I bet she's even been to a Carl's Jr. Humor truly saves!

I founded and produced and performed with an improvisational comedy theater for 20 years. Yes, women are funny. Have been, and will be forever. Most young women starting in "show business" want to be dramatic (serious) actresses and are not too excited about pie-in-the-face humor or being mean---satire. I always thought a funny girl was sexy. I was never afraid of a woman with a sense of humor. A turn-on for me.

As a lifelong partner of a super funny (and beatiful/wonderful) woman, I can tell you that "funny" is a personality trait that only gets better with time, is infectious and certainly has been a key part of our marriage - our kids both caught the bug as well ;)

There should be a comedy camp for young girls on humor and how to be funny. Humor enables empowerment.

That should be a movie or series. Comedy Camp. Hehe.

HAAA! Thanks so much! I knew that I wanted to do something silly with this "book announcement" trend. I'm also childfree, so that made it funnier for me ;) When I showed it to my agent she said, "This is the only kind of 'birth' announcement I'm here for." :)

Love this.

Personally, I think every writer should do this kind of announcement. I guess it was my Carrie Bradshaw registering herself for new shoes moment...:)

Your agent sounds like a peach!

She is fantastic and gets my sense of humor. She knew I was doing it because I wanted it to feel like me, you know? Not that I was disrespecting writers or moms or mom-writers :)

Expand full comment

I don't think you're disrespecting anyone. I think writers nurture their books as they grow within their minds and that bringing a book into the world is very much a form of giving birth. Those are the sweetest, coolest book announcement pix I ever saw!

Thanks! I appreciate it. I meant it in exactly that spirit for sure. And it was fun to have fun with it. I am very fortunate to have done these projects, but there is always stress in the mix. This was a bit of a silly way to make that release day pressure a little more fun 😉

Maybe we all go through a mean humor phase because I definitely did the same thing. I agree with what Sheila said, that much of the time humor is a way of distracting or masking pain from other events in our lives, so I suppose it makes sense that it would manifest that way in the beginning.

And as someone out in the dating pool, I'm all about finding someone who can hold their own in the funny department, or at least play along. Some folks just have no imagination...

Great comment, Rick. She’s out there!

Most of America is or is losing its imagination. You can see it every day. Our elected leaders are perfect examples of a lack of imagine to solve problems

You're totally right, Rick. It's more fun to grow and learn from each other through humor. Absolutely!

Woo hoo!👏

I endorse this.

Also, I can personally attest to Sheila’s playful humor. It’s the best. Often times grown ups don’t want to get silly and go back and forth for rounds and Sheila is always up for it. I personally enjoy it because it keeps me sharp (witty retorts) and as adults we should be engaging in more playful conversations. Why must be always be serious???

Ok, “nuf said. Humor saves (subscribe to it now) and Keep funny and carry on (or whatever SHE said!)

You're amazing my friend...of course! Humor is my love language. I knew as soon as we both started laughing about taking up that ENTIRE Dunk's with just the two of us that it was going to be a friends 4EVA kind of thing. :) I appreciate you indulging my silly and giving it back top notch!! X!

One involves a local film critic. It’s taken on epic proportions that have absolutely nothing to do with this person. It’s just a way to express silliness and vanity. Then there’s “frank arriola” who does exist per Substack. But I don’t think really does.

Expand full comment

Yeah...I'm that person who immediately picks up on something like an odd inflection, a different word, or a strange way of phrasing something. I think it's also from my stint doing improv. You hone in on the quirk (and the accidental ones are the richest) and then exploit that for laughs. Beth had shared me something this film critic wrote in his "About" type of profile that was an old fashioned word. Too bad for you, Film Guy. You are now the main and only character in our private sitcom :)
