Ha! This was such a good read! As a low key Canadian, NYC has never been on my radar but when I see it in TV shows it intrigues me. Not enough to visit though. I get anxiety over the thought of being among so many humans at once ๐
As for slang and abbreviations, I picked up a ton of weird language from spending 15 years all over Jamaica. Their Patois is English but it's so broken and improper and abrupt.
I quickly learned how to order a tank of gas the proper Jamaican way. You don't say "Can I have $20 worth of regular please?"
You abruptly say, "2000....87."
$2000 jmd is twenty dollars and 87 is the octane level of regular gas ๐๐
Love this. I've only been to NY once, but I was so impressed with my niece's very confident NY attitude while hailing a cab. Fun stuff. Hope to return! ๐
Haven't been to NYC but I am planning to, so thank you for the warning...๐ If I was in your position, I'd be too embarrassed to interact with other people or even open my mouth to talk.
love this great essay i remember when you were a greenhorn on here maybe i teased you about the lighting cream rises to the top i guess....better go back see what else i missed
The abbreviations of twenty-somethings to their parents must be universal - I also get the silent one from mine. Loved the NYC lingo and that you were raised in LA but grew up in NYC!
I miss NYC, but not so much the abbreviations as the lingo. I learned what a regular coffee was before I was old enough to drink it. I still stand on line at the post office, and sarcasm is my primary language. Thanks for taking me home.
"Silence is the truest form of abbreviation." <Savors the girl who can't speak> ๐

LOL! ๐
This had me LOL for real through the whole CK!
INRI is my earliest abbreviation encounter. Just found out it's meaning thanks to the internet. (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum)
This is so fun. TISF ๐ซถ
Very funny, like a modern day Erma Bombeck.

Hilarious essay! I didnโt realize all the abbreviations but hereโs one for you to decipher- WTFIGOWATA! Ask me if I remember it. Haha!
I absolutely adored this one! So many chuckles!
Thank you for reminding me of "coffee regular"... I SO miss those blue cups :) xo
